Fattoria La Rivolta
Benevento, Campania, Italy
“Fattoria la Rivolta is a leading estate in Benevento and one of my all-time favourite estates in Campania. Farming is organic, and the vines enjoy south or southeast exposures on calcareous clay soils on a gentle slope that leans toward the Calore River.”— Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
History & Ownership
Fattoria La Rivolta is rooted in the Cotroneo family’s long relationship with the land of Torrecuso, in the province of Benevento, within the hills of Taburno. The estate’s origins date back more than a century and a half, when grandparents Giovanni and Teresa Cotroneo began planting vineyards and farming mixed agriculture, delivering their grapes to local wineries.
In 1991, brothers Mario and Bruno Cotroneo reunited the family’s parcels under a single agricultural project, preserving the estate as a working whole. By 1997, the third generation, Paolo Cotroneo, together with sisters Giovanna and Gabriella and cousin Giancarlo, transformed the farm into a full winemaking estate, restructuring vineyards, restoring the cellar, and introducing the name Fattoria La Rivolta.
Since 1998, all grapes have been vinified on site in a restored early 19th-century stone farmhouse, carefully renovated and continually updated with modern equipment. From the outset, the family committed fully to organic viticulture, achieving ICEA certification in 2001, well ahead of regional norms.
Vineyards & Terroir
Fattoria La Rivolta extends across approximately 60 hectares, all owned by the Cotroneo family. Around 30 hectares are dedicated to vineyards, primarily trained with Guyot and spurred cordon pruning.
The estate lies in the heart of the Taburno subzone, widely regarded as the highest-quality area of Sannio. Vineyards benefit from south to south-east exposure, constant airflow, and a distinctive geomorphology of marl, sandstone, and calcareous soils, enriched by trace minerals that contribute freshness, structure, and longevity to the wines.
The combination of mineral soils, altitude, and non-invasive human presence supports consistent quality and preserves aromatic clarity, making Benevento one of Italy’s most important provinces for DOP, DOCG, and IGP wine production.
Viticulture & Winemaking
Organic farming is at the heart of La Rivolta. Vineyards are managed to protect biodiversity, and yields are kept low to concentrate flavour. Everything is done at the estate, from hand-harvesting to fermentation and aging. Red wines like Aglianico and Piedirosso are fermented in stainless steel or wooden vats. The estate’s cellar holds French oak barriques, large wooden casks, terracotta amphorae, and a bottle cellar for both new releases and reserve wines.
Grape Varieties & Key Wines
La Rivolta works exclusively with native Sannio varieties.
Their main wines include:
- Aglianico del Taburno DOCG
- Taburno Falanghina del Sannio DOC (nearly 8 ha)
- Taburno Sannio DOC Fiano & Taburno Sannio DOC Greco ( approx. 7 ha combined)
- Coda di Volpe Taburno DOC (3 ha, the estate’s flagship white, a variety that had nearly disappeared, stands as one of the Cotroneo family’s most significant achievements)
- Taburno Sannio DOC Piedirosso (approx. 1.5 ha)
Critical & Professional Recognition
Fattoria La Rivolta is a benchmark estate in Benevento with a strong international presence across the U.S., Canada, Japan, and key European and Asian markets. Winery has earned 17 Bibenda Cinque Grappoli awards, most recently for Terra di Rivolta Aglianico del Taburno DOCG Riserva 2021.
