Pago Casa Gran

Valencia, Spain

History & Ownership

Pago Casa Gran is a historic Valencian estate with over 300 years of winemaking heritage, rooted in one of the oldest viticultural landscapes in Iberia. Between the 1960s and 1980s, under the direction of Manuela Galbis, the estate evolved from producing bulk wine for the local market to bottling its own wines. In the 1980s, the acquisition of the historic Casa Benasal marked a major expansion and set the foundation for the modern winery.

In 2006, Manuela’s son, Carlos Laso, founded the Pago Casa Gran we know today. Carlos proudly credits his mother’s courage and determination, recalling her daily 43 km commute on rural roads to tend vines and cellar work at a time when few women held such roles in Spain. Today, Carlos Laso is recognized as a leader in organic and natural farming in Valencia, continuing the family legacy with a focus on sustainability, precision, and terroir expression.

Vineyards & Terroir

In the cradle of Valencia’s Les Alcusses mountains, at over 500 meters above sea level, sits this timeless Pago, the Casa Gran, at the foot of the famed archeological site of La Bastida de Les Alcusses, one of the earliest Phoenician settlements, and one of the best preserved. This lofty valley contends for the title of the earliest vines planted in Iberia. The remnants of winemaking here date back to at least the 4th century BC. These magical vineyards are a Valencian treasure.

Pago Casa Gran is located in the Les Alcusses valley, often referred to as the “Tuscany of Valencia,” just below La Bastida de Les Alcusses in the municipality of Moixent. The estate lies roughly 80 km from Valencia and Alicante and spans 110 hectares, with 70 hectares planted to vines. Vineyards sit at an elevation in a moderate Mediterranean climate.

Viticulture & Winemaking

Carlos Laso is a leader in scaling organic (Pago Casa Gran has been organically certified since 2006)  and natural farming practices in Valencia, embracing permanent crop cover and chemical-free farming since taking over the family domain almost twenty years ago. They're farm booms with biodiversity. In the vineyards, select floral crop cover draws particular pests from the vines of particular varieties. Perhaps more importantly, this cover both cools and enriches the soils in a region famously hot and organically sparse. This excellent fruit enters their newly built cellars where the virtues of terroir-farming meet the crispy-clean crowd-pleasing styling Pago Casa Gran’s known for. The utmost hygiene meets the rigorous organic standards of Delinat and the outcome is pitch-perfect.

Grape Varieties & Key Wines

Pago Casa Gran cultivates a diverse mix of indigenous and international varieties.

Indigenous varieties include Garnacha, Garnacha Tintorera, Malvasía, Monastrell, Moscatel,  and Syrah. International plantings include Gewürztraminer, Merlot,  and Petit Verdot.

The portfolio is structured across four categories: Singular Excellence (Falcata Casa Gran, Falcata Crux), Single Plot Varietals (Single Plot Malvasia), Trendsetters, and Little Artisans (Reposo Blanco, Reposo Rosado, Reposo Tinto). NB: The Reposo line of wines was formerly bottled under the cuvée name Casa Benasal
