Bodegas Enguera

2022 Valencia DO Aliats Verdil Blanco

If you’ve never tasted Verdil, no one could blame you. 40% of it is grown by Bodegas Enguera, their grandfather rescuing it from post-phylloxera extinction in the 60’s. This is its barrel aged-expression, calling to mind some fascinating notes of yellow plum, plantain, cassia, and clove tobacco. And why the bats on the label? Not only is the estate certified Organic, but two of the three Pérez brothers completed PhD’s in ecology and sustainable agriculture, and in fact developed the integrated pest management system that utilizes bat boxes in the vineyards — they’re also huge Batman fans, and they hired one of the DC illustrators to make the Aliats labels! (Aliats meaning Allies in Valencian Catalan.)
