Punset

2016 Barbaresco DOCG Campo Quadro Riserva

2016 Campo Quadro Riserva is a Barbaresco that commands attention without ever feeling forced. The nose is smoky and cherry-driven, layered with red berries, rose petals, and subtle hints of dried herbs, cocoa, and butter. Elegant and structured with intense colour, its complex bouquet moves from vibrant fruit to delicate floral notes, enriched by spices and chocolate. On the palate it is dense, juicy, and weighty, with ripe fruit, fine spice, and refined, lingering tannins. Its evolution in the glass is continuous, offering pleasure sip after sip. Extremely complex and built for longevity, it invites slow drinking, good conversation, and quiet daydreams of the San Cristoforo hills.

"As well as a Riserva from Basarin, Punset produce one from a 1ha parcel in the San Cristoforo cru, called Campo Quadro. The two wines are styled differently, the Basarin being aged traditionally whereas the Campo Quadro matures in both barriques and tonneaux. There are assertive smoky cherry aromas on the nose, while the palate is dense, weighty and somewhat extracted. There is balancing acidity to lift the finish, but at present it lacks finesse. Drinking Window 2021 - 2036." 90pts, Decanter

Region:  Barbaresco, Piemonte

Appellation:  Barbaresco DOCG

Varietal/Blend:  100% Nebbiolo

ABV:  14.5%

Vineyard:  This wine comes from Punset’s vineyards on San Cristoforo hill, among the highest in Barbaresco, including the Basarin and San Cristoforo sites. Campo Quadro, a parcel just under 1.5 hectares, sits on southeast-facing upper slopes, sheltered by mature woodland. Vineyards have been farmed organically since 1982, biodynamically since 1990, and according to Fukuoka principles since 2007. Yields are very low, rarely exceeding 70 q/ha. Grapes are hand-harvested in October during cool early mornings to preserve freshness.

Cellar: Grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks for 47 days with traditional cap management. The wine is gently drained from the skins and aged in barriques and tonneaux for 48 months, followed by over three years in the bottle.
