Vertigine Canaiolo

È Jamu

This wine swept me off my feet the first time I encountered it. It sent me down a rabbit hole investigating Canaiolo — how could this be a mere blending grape in Chianti when it is among the most seductive and elegant reds I've encountered in ages? Well it turns out Canaiolo wasn't always second fiddle! Before phylloxera this was in fact the main variety in Chianti (and central Italy on the whole) but it did not take well to being grafted onto rootstock, becoming less productive in a time before the prestige of Italian wine could command the price points to justify low-yielding vines. Thus its sibling, the glorious Sangiovese, overcame Canaiolo. No less intoxicating than Sangiovese, Canaiolo is far more floral than its herbaceous counterpart, with lilac notes and gentle tannins and a more blackberry-like fruit profile, it makes for an alluring session-wine. It strikes me as the intimate, unplugged, small-venue, acoustic version of the stadium-show Chianti I've always adored on the big stage. It's one of those drops that unlocks a new room in the mansion of experience and reminds you why you love wine so much.
