Sierra de Toloño
Rioja DOCa Tereseño Garnacha
Single vineyard, current vines planted in 1944, with claims to being either the first or the oldest extant Garnacha vineyard north of Rioja. A soaring 700m above sea leavel with insane freshness imparted by the North wind and limestone lastra soil that run from 50cm to 1.5m deep. A wealth of natural springs in the area also add to the complexity of the water table. Sandra farms her own vines all by hand, biodynamically, and harvest is also by hand (into 15kg crates to prevent crushing). Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeast and aged in amphorae where it continues ageing for eight months. Unfined and unfiltered. 13.5%. Only 600 bottles produced in 2023!

Winemakers Note: The real taste of autoctonal Garnacha. Elegant and complex nose, with delicate red flowers aromas. Fresh taste very well balanced with the soft and grassy mouth. It keeps the minerality from the grey calcareos rock (lastra).
What the Critics are saying:
2022 Vintage: After the impressive 2021 last year comes the no-less-impressive 2022 Tereseño, but it obviously shows higher ripeness, given the much warmer and drier year—even though this wine achieved lower alcohol than the 2021 (this has 14%), the sensation is riper in this wine and the quality of the tannins is not as perfect. But still, this is a triumph over the difficult conditions of the year. It's a high-altitude, ripe Garnacha with more Mediterranean character, abundant notes of aromatic herbs and a medium to full-bodied palate with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. Wines from warmer years tend to need more time in bottle. 486 bottles were produced. It was bottled in August 2023 after being vinified and spending one year in amphorae. — 94/100, Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, February 27 2025
2021 Vintage: The nose of the 2021 Tereseño was terrific after a good hour and a half in the glass. It's perfumed, nuanced, elegant and complex, very clean, precise and fresh. The palate is fleshy and juicy, with ripe Garnacha flavors (it has 14.5% alcohol but comes through as very balanced) and very fine tannins. It has tasty, delicious and pungent flavors that make it very long. From this vintage on, it's certified organic. Unfortunately, only 633 bottles were produced. It was bottled in August 2022 after spending one year in amphorae. — 95/100, Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, February 29 2024
