Sierra de Toloño
Rioja DOCa Tinto
Lusciously plummy with fresh tannins outlining the fruit, supported by a zesty edge and firm acid backbone. Really vibrant and driven. Defined flavours of red apple, pomegranate and cherry lifted by wet stone vapours. 100% Tempranillo grown at 650m in organically farmed vineyards near Labastida in Rioja Alavesa; the wine is made with minimal intervention, aged for eight months in neutral French oak barriques and bottled with no fining or filtration. A lovely, bright, drinkable, approachable wine; the first glass invites a second. — 92/100, Decanter, Ines Salpico, March 6 2025
Region: Rioja Alavesa
Appellation: Rioja DOCa
Varietal/Blend: Mainly Tempranillo with a small amount of traditional field blend varieties & mutations
ABV: 13.5%
Vineyard & Vine Age: These vineyards are located in the village of Rivas de Tereso in the eponymous mountains of Sierra de Toloño, perched at 630–740 meters on limestone clay soils derived from calcareous rock. These head vines are trained in the gobelet system and distributed in a scattered mosaic of minute plots. The vines themselves are 40-100 years old and many are own-rooted. Sandra farms her own vines all by hand, biodynamically, and harvest is also by hand (into 15kg crates to prevent crushing).
Cellar: Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast. Eight months in neutral French oak barrels. 30,000 bottles produced.
CSPC: 889828
Winemakers Note: Definitely a different Rioja. Fresh, elegant, and at the same time Mediterranean and floral. Intense colour with purple hues. The aromas of violet and Mediterranean herbs complement the delicate chocolate and toasted notes from the subtle maturation in oak. An elegant mouth, of fresh notes combined with round and sweet tannins. In perfect balance with natural acidity, the finish is kind and persistent.
