Sierra de Toloño
Rioja DOCa Raposo Tempranillo
Region: Rioja Alavesa
Appellation: Rioja DOCa
Varietal/Blend: Tempranillo & Graciano
ABV: 13.5%
Vineyard & Vine Age: These two old vineyards are at 500 meters above sea level and located In the valley of Villabuena de Álava in Rioja Alavesa where the soil is deeper and has more influence from the river. “They maintain a strong mineral accent, and their roots always near to the lastra soil (grey limestone rock). In this Valley I get a boost in ripening because it’s more protected from the winds you get in my mountain vineyards in Rivas de Tereso. That means more weight in the wine.” Tempranillo with a touch of Graciano blended in among the vines as tradition dictates. Sandra farms her own vines all by hand, biodynamically, and harvest is also by hand (into 15kg crates to prevent crushing).
Cellar: Fermented spontaneously with indigenous and aged in large French oak foudres (3000L) for one year. Unfined and unfiltered. 6,500 bottles produced.
CSPC: 129796
Winemakers Note: People in Villabuena de Álava used to be called “Raposo”. This wine has the character and purity of this amazing area. Crunchy bramble and red cherry fruit segue into a palate that’s savoury, dense and serious with the potential to age.
What the Critics are saying:
This is from the valley. The soil has more of a river influence with alluvial character. The wine spends longer time (one year) in 3000 litre barrels. Concentrated, vital and energetic with lovely freshness and focus. There are notes of olive and pepper with some meaty richness, but also freshness. Lovely structure here and also nice fresh acidity. Has drinkability but also complexity: a lovely wine. — 94/100, Dr. Jamie Goode, WineAnorak, March 12 2024
This expressive red crackles with energy, offering a lively overtone of milled pink peppercorn, crushed thyme and rosemary, plus wild raspberry, pomegranate puree and mineral flavors. Plush on the palate, with a fresh, lingering finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2031. — 91/100, Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, May 31 2025
