Sierra de Toloño
Rioja DOCa La Dula Garnachas de Altura
“This is the fourth vintage of Sandra Bravo's brilliant old-vine Garnacha from Rivas de Tereso and it's every bit as good as its predecessors. Aged in 300-litre clay amphoras. It's wonderfully perfumed and intense, with engaging bramble and red cherry fruit sweetness, fine tannins and a long, energetic palate.” 96 points — Tim Atkin MW, Rioja 2023 Special Report. Tim Atkin's Red Wine Discovery of the Year in 2019.
Region: Rioja Alavesa
Appellation: Rioja DOCa
Varietal/Blend: 100% Garnacha (with some old mutations of Garnacha Gris in the fields as well)
ABV: 14.0%
Vineyard & Vine Age: Several octogenarian micro-plots of very low-yielding Garnacha from Rivas de Tereso, 650m-700m, the last Garnacha vines in the area. A smattering of Grenache Gris mutations and a bit of Viura from the old days. Heterogenous soils ranging from limestone clay marls to stonier colluvial limestone soils (called cascajo). Sandra farms her own vines all by hand, biodynamically, hand harvested in 15kg crates.
Cellar: Ferments slowly and spontaneously in small oak foudres at low temps, then racked to 300L amphorae to age. Unfined & unfiltered. 14%. 3,600 bottles produced.
CSPC: 129797
Winemakers Note: Atlantic wine, sharp and really floral. With an acidity that surprises and is in perfect balance with the smooth tannins. Pure freshness that moves you directly to the foot of the Mountain.
What the Critics are saying:
Sandra says she learned to make Garnacha in Priorat. This comes from 650m altitude. ‘This is a perfect place for Garnacha, giving ripe tannins and good acidity,’ says Sandra. Matured in amphora. Truly beautiful with lovely sweet ripe red cherry and black cherry fruit with smooth, silky fruit and nice tannins. Beautifully expressive with volume, elegance and finesse. Such purity and precision, but also a sense of deliciousness. — 95/100, Dr. Jamie Goode, WineAnorak, March 12 2024
I loved the perfumed and varietal nose of the 2022 La Dula—pure Garnacha from high-altitude vineyards in the village of Rivas de Tereso. It's ripe without excess, with 14% alcohol, a low pH (3.39) and very good acidity despite the warm year. It's clean, transparent and precise. It feels young but has an approachable and juicy palate with very fine tannins. Elegant, nuanced and clean. 5,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023 after it matured in foudres and amphorae for eight months. — 93/100, Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, February 29 2024
