Bodegas Enguera
2023 Valencia DO Aliats Tinto
Aliats Tinto is a stick-to-your-ribs comfort wine with a juicy profile of black cherry, plum, and milk chocolate when served at room temperature, but a delicious crunch for the glou glou crowd who would be so keen as to serve it chilled, the way the Valencians do. A crunchy mix of Monastrell (the hometown hero, otherwise known as Mourvèdre) and old-vine Marselan (a 1961 crossing of Grenache and Cab Sauv that has swept the globe in recent years). Super soft tannins and a real crowd pleaser.
Region: Enguera, Valencia
Appellation: Valencia DO
Varietal/Blend: 50% Monastrell, 50% Marselán
ABV: 13.5%
Vineyard & Vine Age: This wine, crafted from organically grown grapes in high-altitude vineyards, draws character from clay-loam soils enriched with limestone and organic matter. The vines benefit from a moderate Mediterranean climate and are nestled within native Mediterranean woodland.
Cellar: Aliats Tinto from Bodegas Enguera undergoes a cold maceration for three days before fermentation. It is then aged for three months in second- and third-use French oak barrels, providing a subtle touch of wood and roundness.
CSPC: 888378
Winemakers Note:
Intense red color with bluish trim. Intense aromas of fresh fruit, redcurrant, strawberry, blackberry. They also emphasize spicy aromas, peppermint, thyme, as well as clove and pepper of French oak. Light and elegant in the mouth. Very good structure, good acidity and balance. Medium post-taste The wine reflects with its elegance and personality faithfully the characteristics of the wines of Fontanars dels Alforins. The evolution in the bottle is very favorable. Fresh fruit evolves into ripe and slightly compote fruit over time.
What the Critics are saying: 90WE - Cherry blossoms plunge into cola, red raspberry and strawberry on the nose followed by dried cranberry skin, black olive and black plum. The palate is a celebration of black fruit and robustness that tapers into red fruit delicacy with more time in glass. Both strong and forgiving, this wine would be best served with substantial meals including steak, beef stew and croque monsieur. — Reggie Solomon
