2025 Maganza Zibibbo

There are aromatic grapes, and then there is Zibibbo. Better known elsewhere as Moscato d’Alessandria, this ancient Mediterranean variety has been called Zibibbo in Sicily for centuries, with the name documented on the island as far back as 1563. It comes from the Arabic zabīb, meaning raisin or dried grape, almost suspiciously appropriate for a variety so comfortable with heat, drought, and blazing southern sun. It is also the second oldest known Muscat after Moscato Bianco and, just to make the family tree even more fun, one of the parents of Grillo. Sweet wine may have made it famous, but dry Zibibbo has its own particular magic, outrageously fragrant with orange blossom, bergamot oil, peach skin, fresh grapes, and dried herbs.

Vineyard:  The grapes come from Salemi, in western Sicily, from vineyards sitting around 50 metres above sea level on medium-textured, calcareous soils. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and are Demeter-certified, with Guyot-trained vines planted at 4,000 per hectare. Yields are around 90 q/ha, and harvest is done by hand in the second half of September.

Cellar: After harvest, the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed, then undergo spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel at 14–16°C for 12–14 days. The wine spends four months on its lees in tank, then rests for at least another two months in bottle before release.
