Todi DOC Marmocchio
Marmocchio translates into “rascal” in Italian. Created from the Brunello clone of Sangiovese, Sangiovese Grosso and crowned with 15% Sagrantino (that shows up as if 50%!), this wine is picked carefully from vineyard rows 110-148. Sagrantino (Umbria’s indigenous ancient grape) and Sangiovese Grosso grapes reach full maturity at different times of harvest, so the two varieties are picked and fermented independently. Alcoholic fermentation by maceration and extraction occur in stainless steel tanks over a 30-day period. Therein, Lorenzo and his sons perform manual follatura (punch downs) three-times per day for even and intense extraction, which will be tamed in barrel and bottle, giving the wine the legs to go the distance. After fermentation the wine is pressed to French oak 500 liter tonneaux for 18 months, then rested in bottle for several years before release.
2018 vintage (current release): 3169 bottles produced.
Region: Todi, Umbria
Appellation: Todi DOC
Varietal/Blend: 85% Sangiovese Grosso, 15% Sagrantino
ABV: 15.4%
Vineyard: From an organic estate vineyard, grapes for this wine are carefully hand-picked at full maturity between rows 110 and 148. The vines thrive on limestone clays at 200–400m under Mediterranean, altitude-moderated conditions.
Cellar: Fermented for 30 days in stainless steel with daily triple punch downs, Marmocchio is then aged 15–18 months in 500L French oak tonneaux, followed by at least 15 months of bottle aging before its final release.
CSPC: 123304
Winemakers Note: This is a full-bodied red wine, dark ruby red in color, with an important structure, rich tannins and hints of ripe dark cherries and plums. Marmocchio is the essence of Umbria compressed into a bottle.
