2022 Côtes du Jura AOC Chardonnay En Barberon

En Barberon, long one of the quiet powerhouses of the Tissot estate, reveals its character here with remarkable clarity. The nearly 50-year-old vines rooted deeply in clay and marl, so reminiscent of Château-Chalon, give this Chardonnay a grounded, unwavering presence, while the scattered limestone scree adds tension and lift. The site is split evenly between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and in this white, the vineyard's personality shines through: confident, precise, and layered.

2022 vintage: En Barberon Chardonnay opens with an inviting nose of yellow flowers, jasmine, nutmeg, saffron, backed by dried herbs and subtle smoke. On the palate, it is dense and textured, with mandarin, pear, and baked apple, lifted by touches of honey, beeswax, and a fine saline streak. Really long finish. Drink through 2038. Abv: 13.5%

Region:  Côtes du Jura

Appellation:  Côtes du Jura AOC

Varietal/Blend:  100% Chardonnay

ABV:  13.5%

Vineyard & Vine Age: 2022 En Barberon Chardonnay comes from 2 hectares of estate-grown vines cultivated organically and biodynamically on Bajocian limestone over Lias marls with east–west exposure. The vines are 5 years old, planted at 7,000 vines/ha, with soil work in spring and early summer and vineyard treatments limited to sulfur, copper, and plant infusions. The 2022 vintage was notably warm, yielding moderate quantities while maintaining a freshness despite elevated natural alcohol levels.

Cellar: Vinification is carried out without added sulphites, allowing the purity and precision of the fruit to shine. Grapes are hand-harvested, pressed whole-cluster using a pneumatic press, and undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in 228-litre barrels. The wine then ages for 24 months in 228L French oak barrels, 12% of which are new, and is bottled unfiltered and without added SO₂. Total SO₂ remains ≤ 20 mg/L.

What the Critics are saying:  "I tasted the bottled 2022 En Barberon Chardonnay that I had already tasted from barrel last year. It comes from younger vines on Lias soils and is the only white from 2022 that had no added sulfur at all. It went through 100% malolactic, and it has a lactic and creamy side with a lot of concentration and power. I liked this one better than the Les Bruyères..." 92-95/100.
