Domaine Olga Raffault

2021 Chinon AOC Le Champ-Chenin

Sylvie & Eric tend some of the oldest Chenin Blanc vines in all of Chinon! This minuscule one-hectare lieu-dit, called Champ-Chenin, is the monopole of Domaine Olga Raffault. It sits on a peculiarly limestone-rich patch of land just west of the famed Les Picasses lieu-dit. Like all of the family’s vines, these are organically tended and harvested by hand.

The nose offers orange pith and fine mineral notes suggestive of powdered chalk. The palate is delicate to start, before firming up in the middle with a rich core of powdered orange zest, white pepper, lemon peel, canned peaches and meringue. A wine that will only appreciate in the cellar and only benefits from a good decant at this age. Best enjoyed at 8-10ºC.

ORGANIC (VIN ISSU DE L'AGRICULTURE BIOLOGIQUE FR-BIO-01)

Region:  Chinon, Loire Valley

Appellation:  Chinon AOC

Varietal/Blend:  100% Chenin Blanc

ABV:  12.83%

Vineyard & Vine Age: Like all of the family’s vines, these are organically tended and harvested by hand. The harvest was quite late in 2021, from October 4th to 5th, with a yield of just 35 hl/ha.

Cellar: The fruit is ever so gently direct-pressed whole bunch in a pneumatic press. The juice is then fermented dry with indigenous yeasts at 20ºC, then aged on the lees without malolactic fermentation and with occasional stirring. Bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration and a minimal SO2 addition. Its production is quite small.

CSPC:  123295

What the Critics are saying:  2018: "The 2018 Chinon Blanc “Champ-Chenin” from Domaine Raffault is really an outstanding bottle of young, bone dry Chenin Blanc. The wine comes in at 12.5 percent alcohol and possess a nervosité on the palate that is really delightful. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of green apple, quince, a lovely base of chalky soil, beeswax, spring flowers and a dollop of upper register lanolin. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied, focused and racy, with a superb core of fruit, excellent mineral drive and a long, nascently complex and impeccably balanced finish. Great juice. 2021-2045." 94pts, John Gilman, View From The Cellar, May-June 2021
