2023 Bourgogne Côte d'Auxerre AOC Cuvée Louis Bersan Blanc

This old-vine under-the-radar white Burg hails from the lieu-dits Vau de Pissou, Le Clou, and La Ronce, boasting vines over 55 years of age, all on Kimmeridgean marls of predominantly white clay and particularly poor soil, checking vine vigour. Vau de Pissou and Le Clou are on the southern slope contiguous with the before-mentioned Sèche-Bouteille, that sun-bathed exposure and gentler slope providing a more substantive expression. La Ronce, which also appears in the Saint-Bris cuvée, is a gentle southwest-facing slope right above the village. In all, these three plots total only one hectare. The humble Côte d’Auxerre appellation title doesn’t stop Jean-Christophe from rolling out the oak carpet for this beautiful fruit. It’s fully deserving! Spontaneously fermenting and ageing one year in a mix of 228L burgundy barriques and 600L demi-muids with periodic bâtonnage, the wine’s then married for four months before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Jean-Christophe recommends you enjoy this wine from 2028-2033 and includes these colourful pairing notes: Fish in sauce, Chablis-style ham, poultry, sweetbreads with cream, pike dumplings.

Vineyard & Vine Age: Fruit from the Vau de Pissou, Le Clou, and La Ronce lieux-dits, totaling one hectare. The 55-year-old vines grow on poor Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils dominated by white clay, with Vau de Pissou and Le Clou on the southern slope and La Ronce on a gentler southwest-facing slope above Saint-Bris. The vines are trained to simple Guyot and harvested by hand.

Cellar: The grapes are pressed immediately after harvest and transferred to 228-litre Burgundy barrels and 600-litre demi-muids, where spontaneous fermentation and ageing take place for 12 months. The fine lees are stirred periodically, after which the components are blended and matured for a further four months in temperature-controlled tanks. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
