Château Marzy

2021 Château Marzy Pomerol AOC Grand Enclos de Riffa

There's a scallop shell on the label of Château Marzy, and it has nothing to do with seafood. It's a nod to the medieval pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela, who once found refuge with the Hospitallers of Pomerol. The Maison family has farmed these eight hectares for generations, on the great Pomerol plateau, where the estate's history stretches back to the 12th century. The wine itself is a lovely reminder of what Pomerol does so well: ripe black cherry, plum, a little violet, cocoa, and earthy truffle, with luscious dark fruit and tannins that seem to melt in your mouth. I'd put this beside duck breast with crispy skin, a slow-roasted leg of lamb, or mushroom pasta with plenty of Parmesan.
