Château de Thésée

Touraine AOC La Closerie Sauvignon Blanc

This is Touraine on its best behaviour. For the diligent hunter of great wines, Touraine has truly fantastic Loire Sauvignon Blancs on offer if you press past the entry level examples to find carefully farmed, low yield, silica terroir driven wines with racy linear acidity and open, effusive grapefruit and gooseberry notes. It draws a beautiful balance between the open aromatics one expects from a new world Sauv Blanc without getting too loud on the nose and without want for the signature minerality and tension of the Loire's silica based soils. These soils in the Chenonceaux area of Touraine are 'limoneux-siliceux avec des éclats de silice', essentially a loamy silica rich soil with silica shards. These are like the little league version of the Silex, the famous flint soils of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé that create wines of massive tension with smokey gun-metal high tones that require at least five years of age in bottle to begin to really reveal themselves. The advantage of these limoneux-siliceux soil areas in appellations like Touraine, Quincy, and the Coteaux du Giennois is that they impart great minerality and character to the wines but their better water retaining capacities yield wines that may not age as long as their more famous neighbours but are more open and aromatic in their youth, perfect for restaurants or for week night meals at home. This wine gives you everything you love about Sauvignon Blanc with genuine character and panache at a solid price and ready to drink. The wine will also age gracefully for 4-5 years.
