Lelarge-Pugeot
Champagne AOC Tradition Brut Nature
Region: Vrigny, Montagne de Reims
Appellation: Champagne Vrigny 1er Cru AOC
Varietal/Blend: 50% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir, 10% Chardonnay
ABV: 12.5%
Vineyard & Vine Age: Lelarge-Pugeot Tradition Extra Brut comes from estate vineyards in Vrigny 1er Cru at 80–120 meters altitude. The vines are over 30-years-old and grow in the sand and clay-limestone soils over chalk bedrock. The current Tradition arrival is based on the 2021 harvest with reserve wines from 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, all Demeter certified biodynamic.
Cellar: The first ferment is done spontaneously with native yeasts, and ages 10 months in French oak foudres and barrels and stainless steel tanks, all on the fine lees. This current release received 0 g/L of dosage (and is thus Brut Nature). ~35ppm SO2.
The family's entry-level stunner spotlights the drive and poise of the estate’s leading lady, the under-appreciated Pinot Meunier variety. These are the estate’s youngest vines yet they boast over 30 years of age. This bottling is the platonic ideal of growers’ champagne, seamlessly weaving the high-toned mineral streak of Vrigny with the rich, fruit forward abundance of this red-dominated cépage, but developed beautifully by the time in oak during the first fermentation. Drawn from a total of 30 micro-parcels in Vrigny, the northernmost premier cru in Champagne, this wine remains a magnificent bang for the buck.
