2018 Barbaresco DOCG Basarin Riserva

There is a reason Basarin has become one of Barbaresco's most celebrated vineyards. Perched on the higher slopes of Neive, it has a remarkable ability to combine Nebbiolo's perfume and finesse with a depth that only time can bring. This Riserva shows exactly why. The nose unfolds slowly with candied strawberries, hazelnut, cedar, wild herbs, and hints of chocolate. On the palate, the tannins have softened into silk, carrying the wine effortlessly across a long, haunting finish. There is plenty of complexity already on display, but also the confidence of a wine that knows it still has years ahead of it.

"Blue flower, underbrush, and wild herb aromas mix with tobacco. Racy and linear, with sour cherry, star anise, and hints of iron. Taut, close-grained tannins leave a drying finish." -90pts, Wine Enthusiast

"Wildly aromatic of wild strawberry and sweet bitters liqueur. Highly textural with grippy, elastic tannins. A huge Neive Barbaresco with time, drinking 2022–2030." 93pts, Michael Godel, Wine Align

Region:  Barbaresco, Piemonte

Appellation:  Barbaresco DOCG

Varietal/Blend:  100% Nebbiolo

ABV:  14%

Vineyard:  This wine comes from Punset’s Basarin vineyards on San Cristoforo hill, the highest point in Barbaresco. The steep southeast- and south-facing slopes are farmed organically and biodynamically, with permanent grass cover to encourage biodiversity and soil health. Following reduced yields after hail in 2017, the 2018 fruit was hand-harvested during the cool mornings of the second week of October.

Cellar: Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks without temperature control. The wine remains on skins for 45 days with gentle cap management before pressing. After natural MLC, it is aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks and a further 36 months in bottle before release.

CSPC:  148856
