2018 Barbaresco DOCG Basarin Riserva

Barbaresco Riserva Basarin is pure elegance in a glass. The colour is deep garnet, warming to orange with age. On the nose, floral and red berry aromas mingle with chocolate, spice, and delicate hints of dried roses. The palate is velvety and harmonious, with silky tannins and a long, graceful finish that keeps you coming back. It’s approachable now yet built to age, offering layers of complexity for those who cellar it.

"Blue flower, underbrush, and wild herb aromas mix with tobacco. Racy and linear, with sour cherry, star anise, and hints of iron. Taut, close-grained tannins leave a drying finish." -90pts, Wine Enthusiast

"Tasting beautifully now with strawberry, cedar, and hazelnut character. Medium-bodied with firm tannins that need to soften. Drinkable now, better after 2024." -92pts, James Suckling

"Wildly aromatic of wild strawberry and sweet bitters liqueur. Highly textural with grippy, elastic tannins. A huge Neive Barbaresco with time, drinking 2022–2030." 93pts, Michael Godel, Wine Align

Region:  Barbaresco, Piemonte

Appellation:  Barbaresco DOCG

Varietal/Blend:  100% Nebbiolo

ABV:  14%

Vineyard:  This wine comes from Punset’s Basarin vineyards on San Cristoforo hill, the highest point in Barbaresco. The steep upper slopes face mainly southeast with some south-facing sections, allowing slow, even warming through the day. Vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically following Fukuoka principles, with permanent grass cover. Yields in 2018 were reduced after hail damage in 2017. Grapes were hand-harvested in the second week of October during cool early mornings.

Cellar: Grapes were fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks without temperature control. The wine spent 45 days on skins with gentle cap management before being softly pressed. Malolactic fermentation completed naturally, followed by 36 months aging in large Slavonian oak casks and 36 months in bottle.
