Massimago

2021 Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Conte Gastone

Conte Gastone was born from the idea that Amarone should be enjoyed anytime, not just on special occasions. It has elegance and persistence, but also a brightness and approachability that make it effortless to drink while still feeling special. The nose opens with plum and black cherry, layered with clove and black pepper. On the palate, it’s velvety and generous. Finely balanced between sweet and savoury, earthy and rich, it’s the kind of Amarone you can geek out over while still pouring a second glass without hesitation.

Region:  Valpolicella

Appellation:  Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG

Varietal/Blend:  55% Corvina veronese, 35% Corvinone, 10% Rondinella

ABV:  15%

Vineyard:  From estate vineyards in Mezzane di Sotto, grapes are hand-harvested at full maturity. Vines grow on limestone soils at 100-400m, planted at 7,000 /ha and trained in a Guyot system.

Cellar: After careful hand selection, the grapes are placed in flat wooden trays and left to dry for approximately 90 days in Massimago’s Fruttaio, where temperature and humidity are carefully controlled. The dried grapes are then de-stemmed and gently crushed, followed by a prolonged maceration of over 25 days in stainless steel vats with frequent pump-overs. Both alcoholic and MLC take place in the same vats. After racking, the wine is aged for almost 36 months in 20 hl Allier and Slavonia oak casks, followed by additional time in bottle. ~15,000 bottles made.
