LUNA GAIA

2025 Mandricardo Catarratto

For a grape planted so widely across western Sicily, Catarratto has spent an awfully long time being underestimated. Its origins disappear somewhere into the island’s history, and for generations it was the great workhorse white of the west, responsible for oceans of everyday wine and an important part of the Marsala story. With lower yields and thoughtful farming, it gets seriously delicious, with yellow citrus and ripe stone fruit slipping into wild herbs, marzipan, and this almost olive oil and lemon kind of savouriness that feels wonderfully Sicilian.

Biodynamic Wine

Region:  Salemi, Trapani, Sicilia

Appellation:  Terre Siciliane IGT

Varietal/Blend:  Catarratto

ABV:  13%

Vineyard:  The grapes come from Salemi, in western Sicily, from vineyards sitting around 50 metres above sea level on medium-textured, calcareous soils. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and are Demeter-certified, with Guyot-trained vines planted at 4,000 per hectare. Harvest is done by hand at the beginning of September.

Cellar: After harvest, the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed, then undergo spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel at 14–16°C for 12–14 days. The wine spends four months on its lees in tank, then rests for at least another two months in bottle before release.
