LUNA GAIA

2024 Logistilla Nerello Mascalese

Forever tied to Etna, but not confined to it, this is one of Sicily’s most fascinating native reds. The variety was selected centuries ago around Mascali, on Etna’s eastern side near the sea, and Salvo Foti rather perfectly calls it a “beach bum” because it really does love the heat. Genetically, it is a natural crossing of Sangiovese and Mantonico Bianco, which makes a lot of sense once you get into its mix of perfume, freshness, and tannin. Wild strawberry, red sour cherry, and dried rose are classic Nerello territory, with a little dusty earth and dried herbs woven through.
