Region: Montepulciano, Tuscany
Appellation: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG
Varietal/Blend: 80% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese), 20% Canaiolo & Colorino
ABV: 14%
Vineyard: Pietra Rosa vineyard in the Salarco Alto area of Montepulciano. The 35-year-old vines grow on two hectares of Pliocene red clay soils at 350 to 450 meters altitude with southeast exposure. The vines are trained in spalliera with cordon pruning at about 4,500 vines per hectare and hand harvested in late September.
Cellar: Grapes are destemmed, crushed, and fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats with selected yeasts. Fermentation and maceration last 18 to 20 days at 26 to 28°C with frequent pump overs. After pressing, the wine completes MLC before ageing 30 months in French and Slavonian oak casks, with rackings every six months. It then rests 3 to 4 months in stainless steel before bottling and a further 8 to 10 months of bottle ageing. ~8,000 to 10,000 bottles produced.
