2021 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG Mulinvecchio

Magic starts in Mulinvecchio, a tiny one-hectare vineyard in Montepulciano, where the family hand-harvests fruit from 25-year-old vines for this cuvée. The nose unfolds slowly, with truffle, earth, dried rose, camphor, and star anise all gradually coming into focus. On the palate, it opens with Morello cherry and strawberry compote before cinnamon, herbs, and a little twist of licorice creep in on the finish. The tannins are firm but polished, while the acidity keeps everything lifted. It’s powerful without feeling heavy, and you get the sense it’s only going to become more beautiful with time.

Region:  Montepulciano, Tuscany

Appellation:  Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG

Varietal/Blend:  80% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese), 20% Canaiolo & Colorino

ABV:  14%

Vineyard:  Mulinvecchio vineyard in the Mulinvecchio area of Montepulciano. The 25-year-old vines grow on one hectare of Pliocene tufa-sand soils at 350 to 450 meters altitude with southeast exposure. The vines are trained in spalliera with cordon pruning at about 4,500 vines per hectare and hand harvested in late September.

Cellar: Grapes are destemmed, crushed, and fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats. Fermentation and maceration last 18 to 20 days at 26 to 28°C with frequent pump overs. After pressing, the wine completes MLC before ageing 30 months in French and Slavonian oak casks, with rackings every six months. It then rests 3 to 4 months in stainless steel before bottling and a further 8 to 10 months of bottle ageing. ~6,000 to 8,000 bottles produced.
