Söl Valtellina Superiore Valgella DOCG

Barbacàn

Here we ascend the ladder of what the Valtellina can achieve. Barbacàn’s precious Söl vineyard lies in the hallowed sub-zone of Valgella, furthest east of the Valtellina cru’s, and known for being the lightest and most delicate but no less age-worthy than it’s counterparts. This is widely considered the most delicate Nebbiolo expression on Earth. The Söl vineyard is largely Chiavennasca (Lombardian Nebbiolo) interplanted in the traditional mode with roughly a a tenth Rossola. The wine is vinified as gently as possible, then aged 12 months in old oak and at least 12 months further in bottle before release. Here we encounter the spicier and more floral aspect of this variety, all while maintaining the red fruit typicity of Chiavennasca. A more powerful and long-ageing example than the Rosso, this fleet-footed wine somehow also carries a degree higher ABV of 14%, greater intensity, and an amplified tannic structure. The 2019 Söl shows a freshness and balance that allude to the further elegance available to those with patience. We begin to witness the power of Nebbiolo, steeled against the “breva” winds of this river valley. Serious but approachable, a singular Cru from the Sega family.
