Domaine Olga Raffault
2008 Chinon AOC Les Picasses (Library Release)
"From one of the cooler vintages of the decade, this lighter interpretation of Les Picasses opens with a fresh and floral nose, with scents of dried red currants, powdered chalk and wild flowers. It is finessed and elegant on the palate, with a very silky and correct build, with a lightly framed body of maturing currant and berry fruits. Charming, fresh and upright, with a delicately chalky core substance, leading to a finely gripped finish. This is an old-school charmer, with a light body and firm structure, which surely still has development potential." - Chris Kissack, The Wine Doctor
Region: Chinon, Loire Valley
Appellation: Chinon AOC
Varietal/Blend: 100% Cabernet Franc
ABV: 12.5%
Vineyard & Vine Age: Les Picasses is one of Chinon’s more discreet lieux-dits, easy to miss on a map and often misunderstood in its location. Rather than the western edge of the appellation, it lies north of the town of Chinon and east of Avoine, tucked between La Cave Pelletier and the Rue Cinq Pères in the Puys du Chinonais.
Les Picasses occupies a soft, south-facing slope descending from 65 to 50 metres above sea level. Its soils are layered and expressive, with Upper Turonian yellow limestone at the top of the slope, classic Chinon millarges of calcareous, shell-bearing sands through the mid-slope, and a narrow seam of Middle Turonian white chalk at the base.
