Domaine Olga Raffault
2020 Chinon AOC Les Peuilles
Thankfully, this is a task Domaine Olga Raffault undertakes on all of our behalf, releasing the wine when its tensile perfume and cagey minerality has resolved.
With a matchstick charm, the nose leads into a supple and velvety core of fruit, held together on the palate by a comfy tannin outline, leading to a pillowy finish. “A very supple style, which Sylvie puts down to the richer upper layers of clay at this site.” (Kissack, 2024).
Region: Chinon, Loire Valley
Appellation: Chinon AOC
Varietal/Blend: 100% Cabernet Franc
ABV: 12.5%
Vineyard & Vine Age: Les Peuilles is a lieu-dit just south of the village of Beaumont-En-Véron (in the northwest corner of the Chinon appellation), closer to the Vienne river. The vineyard is on a gently south-facing plateau with soils of clay and flint.
Raffault’s seven hectares of Les Peuilles holdings are largely comprised of impressively old vines (averaging 43yo even with the recently replanted portions).
Cellar: Once fermented in stainless steel (below 30°C with a long 30-day maceration), the wine is aged in gargantuan 7,000-litre French oak foudres for a year.
CSPC: 123300

What the Critics are saying: "Domaine Olga Raffault’s 2020 'les Peuilles' is a superb young bottle of Chinon. The bouquet is deep, complex and very precise, wafting from the glass in a mix of dark berries, cassis, cigar ash, flinty soil tones, tree bark, just a hint of oak and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with a lovely core of black fruit, fine soil signature, ripe, seamless tannins, fine focus and grip and a long, beautifully balanced and complex finish. There is just a whisper of brett here, but compared to vintages from the domaine back in the 1990s, it is virtually undetectable in comparison. Good juice. 2030-2075." — 92pts, John Gilman, View From The Cellar, July 2024
