2022 La Grange Vieilles Vignes

Luneau Papin

This wine may represent the best bang for buck in our entire book. This old-vine vineyard was once the eponymous plot of the house, formerly called Domaine de la Grange decades ago. Jon Bonné describes the wine as "overtly rich but wonderfully shish-edged" in his recently released magnum opus, The New French Wine. It is a wine that typifies great Muscadet while standing on its own singularity.

Serve at 12˚C. Excellent as an aperitif with shellfish, fish in a sea salt crust, roasted fillet of sea bream, Asian cuisine, or fresh cheeses.

Country:  France

Region:  Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, Loire Valley

Appellation:  Muscadet Sèvre et Maine AOP

Climate:  Cool Atlantic

Altitude:

Soils:  Schist and mica schist

Varietal/Blend:  100% Melon de Bourgogne

Fermentation:  Pressed in a pneumatic press. Cold clarification of grape juice, then temperature controlled fermentation at 20° C for several weeks using only indegenous yeasts.

Ageing:  Vinification and maturation is on the lees in underground vats lined with glass tiles. Seven months lees contact until bottled.

Vineyard & Vine Age:  Biodynamic estate. Selection massale. This wine comes from a single parcel in the village of Le Landreau ('The Grange' vineyard) planted on mica shist with a southern exposure. The Luneau family are pioneers in this regard and still amongst the only producers in Muscadet to bottle single vineyard expressions of their land. They've been doing it since the 80's.
