From the Mairlant vineyard, François Villard’s first Syrah vineyard and the site closest to his cellars in Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône. These and the vines of Poncins are those he knows most intimately. These 33 year-old vines face south east at a density of 5,000-8,000 vines per hectare on decomposed granite. Yields of only 42hl/ha. 100% whole cluster, 14 days of maceration in open wood vats and stainless, then 18 months in oak barrels. 13.5%. 21,000 bottles made. Cellaring potential: 20 years.

Vineyard & Vine Age:  Bull Swamp and Manilla vineyards in Baw Baw Shire. The vines were planted in 1961 and and 1964 respectively.

Cellar: François Villard Saint-Joseph AOC Mairlant Rouge is fermented 100% whole cluster with indigenous yeast, macerated 14 days in open wood vats and stainless. The wine is then aged for 18 months in oak barrels, developing depth, structure, and complexity.
