Domaine Barrère

2014 Domaine Barrère Cuvée Prestige Moelleux Jurançon AOC

Domaine Barrère has been in the family for generations, farming 16 hectares across three vineyard sites, with some seriously old vines. Their 2014 Cuvée Prestige is a wonderful example of what a little age can do to Jurançon, bringing out candied citrus peel, honey, toasted hazelnuts, and those slightly savoury, nutty notes that make older sweet wines so much fun. It's rich, almost oily in texture, but the acidity is still very much alive. Pair it with Manchego and black cherry jam, or duck pâté on toasted baguette.

Region:  Lahourcade, Jurançon

Appellation:  Jurançon AOC

Varietal/Blend:  70% Petit Manseng, 30% Gros Manseng

ABV:  13.5%

Vineyard & Vine Age: The estate farms 16 hectares across three plots, Cancaillaü, Clos de la Vierge and Lahitte, at the foot of the Pyrenees in Béarn. Soils vary by parcel, with clay and limestone, rolled pebbles, and Jurançon pudding stones.

Cellar: The grapes are picked by hand in several selective passes, choosing berries affected by noble rot. After harvest, they are pressed immediately and settled before fermentation in tank. The wine then rests 6–11 months on the fine lees in neutral vats, with no oak used, before further bottle ageing.
