Clos des Aumônes

Vouvray AOC Tradition Brut

Clos des Aumônes is such an exciting discovery. Their Brut is cut from the finest cloth, extremely effervescent and effusively Vouvray on the nose with lots of yellow fruit, paraffin wax, salty dried loquats, and meadowy dried hay and flowers on the wind. On the palate, crunchy pear and apple blossom join the above, with incredible laser bright acidity, resolving into a nice tertiary finish of bruised apple and macadamia notes and a hint of oak. With just five minutes of air and warming, the wine only improves further, revealing sweet ripe pears, that terrific Chenin profile, that textbook quince eau de vie thing coming through on the finish, and some of that seedsy grape skin nuance and wet wool appearing. A wonderfully complex wine with lasting minerality and tons of evolution in the glass. I am over the moon with this find!

Region:  Vouvray, Loire Valley

Appellation:  Vouvray AOC

Varietal/Blend:  100% Chenin Blanc

ABV:  12.0%

Vineyard & Vine Age: 2021 base vintage. Benoît Coulon has 16 hectares situated in Rochecorbon, 5ha of which are in the Clos des Aumônes itself, on the première côte. Beyond this, 2/3rd of Benoît's vines are similarly positioned on the première côte, including La Fuye, which sits near the 15th-century watchtower called La Lantern, overlooking the Loire. The remaining one-third of his vines is positioned higher up on the plateau, nestled in the Vaufoynard valley, which is on the western end of the appellation, and not far back from the plateau edge. The soils are principally clay over a deep bed of Turonian limestone. The soils are peppered with fossilised shark teeth. The domaine is planted entirely to Chenin Blanc, dedicated to the production of Vouvray in all its forms. Vineyards under organic conversion since 2022.

Cellar: Traditional method. The first fermentation was mainly in stainless steel with a few barrels as well. Three years in bottle for secondary fermentation and ageing.
