Château Carbonnieux
2019 Pessac-Léognan AOC Rouge, Grand Cru Classé de Graves
"Dominated by structured Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is powerful, with layers of wood-aging flavours to go with the strong tannins. Developing slowly, it is likely to be ready from 2026." 93 pts, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast
Region: Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux
Appellation: Pessac-Léognan AOC
Varietal/Blend: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot
ABV: 14.5%
Vineyard & Vine Age: The vineyards sit on 55 hectares of classic Graves terrain, a single, continuous block of deep gravel over clay subsoil. Vines average 26 years of age, planted densely at 7,200 vines per hectare and farmed parcel by parcel from pruning to harvest. The estate is certified HVE Level 3 and follows a reasoned, environmentally focused approach. Guyot-Poussard and cordon pruning are used, all canopy work is done by hand, and harvesting is fully manual with selection in the vineyard and double sorting at the cellar. Merlot leads the way in late September, followed by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Sauvignon into early October.
Cellar: Each variety is vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with a three to four week maceration at 26–28°C and regular pump-overs to build structure gradually and precisely. Ageing follows in French oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, with 35–40% new wood.
CSPC: 120761
