Suriol

Penedes, Spain

Suriol winemaking family that dates back 400 years, located just 60km west of Barcelona in the hills of the Alt Penedès. At the helm are the joyful personalities of 16th and 17th generation vignerons Francis and Assis Suriol.

The Suriol's operate out of their 350 year old Gabruac Castle and its time honored cellars. Centuries of experience and an unwavering commitment to tradition have preserved bygone pre-industrial winemaking techniques such that today their wines are championed by the 'natural wine' movement as an artifact of classical wine. They are local leaders in organic and biodynamic farming in their region and masterful sculptors of cavas and still wines.

"The wine is the vineyard and the winemaker and farmer are the only midwife and nanny accompanying this and from that moment"- Francis Suriol.

The Suriol family creates wines of place and substance, marked as much by great farming as by the dynamism of yeast flora in their ancient cellars. This complex centuries-old population of indigenous yeast imparts a dazzling array of unique notes that mark Suriol's wines with an intoxicating singularity.

Their credo can be summed as follows: Offer the most natural and healthy product possible to feed the body and the spirit through a full respect of the natural environment . For this reason, they can not forget the following main areas:

Their emphasis on sustainability, biodiversity, tradition, knowledge, social responsibility, and unwavering commitment to quality is fully expressed in their unique and dynamic wines.

"We have only one way to produce quality grapes: We own our vineyards and cultivate our own grapes, 32 hectares under vine with over 25 completely different micro plots, each farmed deftly to limit yields and emphasize nuanced wines expressing the unique terroir of each specific plot and of the Pènedes as a whole." Suriol also tends 3 hectares of arbequina olive trees and a well-loved flock of sheep that graze their vineyards, led by Quico, a good friend of the family.
